Two lucky T H WHITE customers recently won meals at high-end and well loved British restaurants.

Congratulations are due to Paul Tilt of K W Tilt & Sons who won dinner for two at the Ivy restaurant after completing our recent farming and machinery usage survey.

Paul runs K W Tilt and Sons, a family business that has been trading in Worcestershire and Staffordshire for over 100 years. They offer many services from baling and wrapping, hedge cutting, muck spreading, ploughing and combining & fencing. K W Tilt & Sons are available for work in a 20 mile radius from their farm base in Belbroughton.

Elizabeth Butler was the lucky winner of our 29th leap year competition and is looking forward to a meal at any of the Pig restaurants, which are based over the south of England. Elizabeth runs a smallholding close to Huntley, where she raises goats and supplies apples to local cider maker Westons, famous for its Henry Westons range of vintage ciders. When we called to let Elizabeth know she’d won, she thanked us and said the was delighted to have been chosen.

T H WHITE’s Technical Manager Simon Holmes has long been a champion of apprentice engineers for our sectors of Agriculture, Dairy, Construction and Groundcare but his latest efforts in engaging an MP in the subject, really live up to the trailblazing name of the group he co-chairs.

The Land Based Service Engineering (LBSE) Apprenticeship Trailblazer group was established way back when apprenticeship standards were being set.  Simon joined the group as an employer representative in 2022 and stepped up to co-chair shortly afterwards.  He co-chairs alongside David Kirschner, an independent consultant for the Land Based industry with a background working for the initial Fendt tractor importer and Renault Agriculture.  This employer-led group consists of employers, manufacturers, training providers and assessment organisations throughout England and David represents the coalition of industry bodies that form LE-TEC (AEA, BAGMA & IAgriE).

The group was formed to represent land-based service engineering. They review the Level 2 & 3 LBSE apprenticeship standards to ensure that they are fit for purpose for the next 5 years.

The parties reviewed and audited the provision for upcoming apprentices and highlighting several critical issues in their proposals.  These being:

1. The amount of funding for such a complex apprenticeship is low, risking more colleges pulling out of the sector.
   
2. The funding is driving down wages of lecturing staff, meaning that skilled knowledgeable people are not attracted to our sector. The knock-on effect is the quality of delivery is lowered and there is no succession planning by these colleges as they are working hand to mouth.
   
3. Across all apprenticeships the levy fee is not fully utilised, meaning that the surplus is taken back by the government, but not reinvested into apprenticeships.
   

Earlier this year a conservative MP Nick Fletcher championed this very topic with a 20 second TikTok video promoting access to LBSE apprenticeships in the simple and engaging manner.  He stood in front of a Case IH tractor and highlighted the skill set and satisfaction of mending or servicing it.  Take a look – https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGehAmwoL/

Simon wrote to Nick Fletcher to thank him, and invited him to a meeting to learn more.  With Nick’s constituency in Yorkshire, Simon didn’t anticipate a response but was thrilled with a quick reply to meet.  So last week in Bawtry, South Yorkshire, Simon and Nick overran their initial time slot engaged in fruitful discussion around how the LBSE apprenticeship pathways could prosper.  Nick then sent back his Assistant, Andrew Issacs, to continue the discussions and our Government colleagues left with a commitment to share an understanding of these issues.

We are delighted to have received such engagement from Nick Fletcher MP and Andrew Issacs.  We are hopeful of these discussions prompting a review in policy.  Well done to Simon and David for continuing to shine a light on such as important career pathway for our younger generation and thank you to our government colleagues in anticipation of ongoing engagement.

Last week, T H WHITE Frome delivered a used tractor to its next proud owner.

This happens every day in our depots, so it’s not an unusual occurrence. 

The tractor that found its latest home last week is a JXU 105, a smallish red CASE IH machine first registered in 2010 that if you read the brochure that it originally came with, would say is suitable for general farm work and can be equipped with a loader.

Fourteen years ago the brand new 105 came into stock at T H WHITE Frome, where it was fitted with a front loader and bought by Clifford Rossiter, a beef farmer based in the lovely village of Laverton close to Frome town in Somerset. Clifford used our 105 to cut grass to make silage to feed his animals, then clear up the inevitable muck, tidy the yard and trim hedges around the farm.

Two years later, Clifford decided he needed a more powerful machine with greater horsepower, so he traded the 105 in with us for another CASE IH model, a JXU 115. Our 105 once again came into the Frome workshop. After a clean and good service, it was sold as a used tractor to David Horler from Radstock in Somerset to help run a 200ha organic farm growing wheat, barley and red clover and running a 50 cow suckler herd.

In addition to being a farmer, David is also the man behind the Tractor Ted range of children’s books, DVDs and gifts popular with young British children. The Tractor Ted brand is stocked in over 600 country shops in the UK and Ireland.

Our 105 helped with feeding the herd, making silage and many other jobs on the farm that still inspires the Tractor Ted stories.

David kept the little 105 for twelve years. Eventually, very recently, trading in for a shiny new CASE IH Maxxum 125, with an upgraded interior. Little 105 was back in the Frome workshop, ready for a good clean, a service and a brand-new home.

Last week, Emma Simpson, a traditional dairy farmer from Buckland Dinham, (also very close to Frome); who along with her husband and father keeps 120 milkers, bought the 105 to deliver feed, cut grass once again and keep the farm looking tidy. Emma and her two young daughters, Annabelle aged 4 and Jessica aged 8 are already delighted with their new tractor. Emma said “Annabelle is very attached to this new tractor, so much so that we’re thinking of having another seat fitted inside for her. She even helped me drive it earlier today”.

Although this tractor has been relied upon by three farmers, returning regularly to us for care and maintenance, it has only travelled a total distance of eight miles around the Frome area in Somerset.

Maybe it’s unusual to have such a close partnership with local farms, and even specific farm machinery like our little CASE 105, but at T H WHITE we prefer to do things differently; and this is not an unusual thing for us.

We don’t just sell tractors, we sell machines that become nurtured and perhaps even loved by the farmers who depend on to them to support their families and businesses.

And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

Jake Betteridge has been in post as a Sales Representative with T H WHITE Pro Agri in Stockbridge for almost six months now – and is relishing the challenge of his new career choice.

Jake’s previous role was within the service department of a neighbouring dealer, looking after warranty claims and aftersales requirements. ‘I’m well and truly on the other side of the fence in my new role – I used to have customers come to me, but now I’m the one on the road, chasing customer sales’ he smiles. ‘Fundamentally, it’s all about building new relationships and that’s something I’ve always enjoyed doing’.

In fact, life on the road has been a great learning experience for Jake so far – attending the recent LAMMA show with the sales team was a notable highlight and he’s already looking forward to next year’s show. ‘It was a real eye-opener’, he says. ‘A great way to meet existing customers as well as potential buyers – getting to know “who’s who” and seeing first-hand what makes this side of the industry tick.’

Product demos have also proven to be a highly informative experience for Jake. ‘Seeing the new Case IH Axial-Flow 250 Series combine and MacDon FD2 header in action over the summer was another excellent introduction to an array of fantastic product’, he comments.‘ And I’m certainly looking forward to seeing some of my customers sitting comfortably in Red Power machines over the next few months – with a few more product demos in the pipeline for later this year.’

Jake lives on the outskirts of Collingbourne and enjoys taking his Husqvana TE 300 Enduro bike across Salisbury Plain at the weekends, as well as walking his 3 year old German Shorthaired Pointer.

We caught up with John Lippiat to see how he has been getting on with the New Holland tractor we supplied him with last February.

Pressbarrow Farm lies in Priston, a small village set within rolling green hills just south of Bath in Somerset. The dairy farm has diversified over the years and in addition to producing milk from its’ own herd, now sports a thriving seasonal Christmas tree business and another business that offers popular beauty treatments. John Lippiat the farmer, has been a T H WHITE customer for almost 40 years, and recently upgraded his tractor with our Frome branch, picking up a New Holland T6160 Dynamic Command on the 7^th Feb 2023 with Quicke Q5 loader bucket and grab, coloured in New Holland’s iconic power blue.

We spoke to John about his relationship with T H WHITE over the years, and his new tractor.

He said “I always wanted New Holland as a kid and went blue once I started running the farm. Since then, I’ve bought well, perhaps luckily even. I chose good quality kit and the New Holland tractors have been very reliable. T H WHITE have stood by me over the years and been very helpful. The support they’ve offered has been comprehensive.

We now use the T6.160 tractor as our main machine for the farm. Alongside our T6.180 which is our additional tractor and our much used workhorse New Holland T6050 which is still going even after 18,500 hours of hard labour.

We use the new T6.160 for feeding the cows all winter and baling and feeding all summer – it gets used every day, sometimes all day every day!

It’s easy to climb into, with a comfortable chair, runs quietly and is very easy to use. The New Holland tractors seem to last longer these days, and that helps with the business side of things. Even with the hours we do, the T6.160 is proving to be dependable.

I suffer from back pain, and although I know it when I get out of other tractors, with New Holland my back is fine! I can climb out of the T6 and not realise I’ve done 16 or so straight hours in it.

We moved over to Kuhn attachments around 2011. I find Kuhn very robust. Our Bale Spreader /Feeder has transformed the bedding and really reduced straw usage.

We also use a Kuhn rake in front of our New Holland BR7060 round baler and now everyone tells me what a tidy job it does – which is nice to hear from your neighbours!

I genuinely wouldn’t be without any of the machinery or help I get from T H WHITE. Stuart Button, our rep for many years, has been very reliable and we have a great working relationship. We have been dealing with him and T H WHITE now for longer than I care to remember!”

Good seedbed preparation is essential for healthy crop growth and KUHN offer a wide range of seedbed tools for groundwork that include tine, disc, combinations tools and harrows.

Harrows play a crucial role in farming, and power harrows are optimal for enhancing soil structure while reducing compaction.

Despite power harrowing being a method of seedbed preparation involving a moderate amount of tillage, power harrows still work to preserve the health of soil. The use of vertical tines means that soil is only tilled along one axis, providing aeration and improving porosity, while maintaining some of the soil’s natural composition. The result offered by the power harrow is a healthy, nutrient-rich seedbed which is also aerated, and which drains water well.

Using a power harrow can also help farmers prevent the formation of hardpan, the dense, compacted layer of soil, typically found just below the topsoil layer. Hardpan can cause a plethora of problems, most serious among them being the lack of drainage. By using rotating, vertical tines, power harrows break through compacted hardpan soil, aerating the seedbed and breaking up large clods.

After the rain we’ve had, a power harrow could really come in handy.

New Holland has pulled the wraps off its highest capacity combine harvester yet, which might just leave the competition choking behind its chaff spreader.

Called the CR11, it has almost nothing in common with it’s smaller, older brother and current flagship, the CR 10.90.

The CR11 has been 10 years in development. Threshing is still carried out by twin rotors, but these are larger 24in units that offer considerably higher throughput.

Other headline stats include a 775hp six-cylinder FPT C16 engine mounted to the side of the machine for better weight distribution, a 20,000-litre grain tank, 210-litre/sec unloading speed and the option of fitting a 15m (50ft) fully integrated MacDon flex header.

The harvester was designed and will be assembled at the company’s Center of Harvesting Excellence in Zedelgem, Belgium.

Key to the functionality is the New Holland Twin Rotor technology. This is said to deliver the lowest grain crackage on the market.

The CR11 can also unload rapidly, reaching 210-litres per second.

Shaun Kennett achieves Master Tech status

Congratulations from everyone here at T H WHITE to Shaun Kennett, who has been awarded ‘Master Technician’ status in New Holland’s Tractor class. This means that Shaun has attended and passed all tractor training modules at New Holland, displaying his ability in asset reporting and competence in practical engineering.  Shaun was visited by David Pegrum, New Holland zone manager, recently to be presented with his award.

Shaun joined T H WHITE in 2007.  He’d always had a interest in farming having helped out on his Uncle’s Dairy Farm at Cleverton.  He began his training at Lackham College where he studied a three-year Land-based technical course spending his placement year with T H WHITE to gain on-the-job experience.  Realising his interest was in the machinery aspect, he returned to us to develop his career and is now a New Holland specialist working on a wide range of equipment which passes through the workshop including tractors, self-propelled foragers, balers and combines.

Service manager, Alastair Grierson, acted as a mentor for Shaun providing coaching and support throughout his development to help him achieve his certificate and commends him on his achievement.  ‘This knowledge will ensure Shaun continues to develop as a leading technician in his field and be a valued team member to his colleagues here at Knockdown, delivering best in class customer service’.

Our new Agricultural Sales Representative covering Shropshire and the outskirts of Birmingham.

Tom grew up on a family beef farm in Cleobury Mortimer, close to Kidderminster in the West Midlands.  Finding these early years rewarding in the freedom of the countryside, stunning scenery and fresh air, this instilled a passion and respect for the land and the desire to follow an active career path that keeps him outdoors.  No stranger to hard work the chores around the farm demanded constant attention but Tom and his siblings loved the animals and became a tight harmonious little team.

Tom went on to study a BTEC in Agriculture at the Walford campus of North Shropshire college specializing in technical machinery and land management.  A highlight of this course was a study trip to New Zealand to gain exposure to larger farms and different ways of working.  He also picked up some shearing skills down under.

After that, Tom then spent several years working on local farms, both beef and arable as a farm hand and machinery operator.  It was an interesting time he recalls.  Tractors were getting larger, more sophisticated and guidance was emerging.  He began to learn the ‘must have’ machinery features to make farm operations more productive and efficient.

He then took the leap in running his own Contracting business, starting out in grassland, mowing and baling, and then on to specialised slurry tanking and digestate spreading followed by a commissioning project of an  Anaerobic Digester plant.  Always looking for the next challenge, he turned his hand to growing hops at Brook House Hops near Bromyard next. The firm sadly folded in March this year, taking Tom back to his self employed role.

With a decade of practical experience behind him, his old boss recommended him for the sales role at T H WHITE feeling his enthusiastic, fun and hard-working character would be just the right fit for us.  We couldn’t agree more.  Tom has already embraced the role, connecting with existing and new clients across the mixed farms in his sales territory and introducing his key brands – New Holland, Kverneland, Manitou, McConnel and Ktwo.  Particularly impressed with New Holland’s Auto Command functionality, he’s reflecting on how far tractors have come in driver comfort, cab environment and easy to use features.

FarmDroid’s world-first fully automatic robot that both seeds and mechanically weeds, is still the only piece of equipment on the market performing the two operations simultaneously.

Ed Lea, farm manager at Sandfields Farm near Stratford upon Avon, purchased one from T H WHITE this summer and has been very impressed with its performance and output.  Powered by solar panels, this highly innovative machine is CO2 neutral and offers zero energy costs whilst reducing the costs of drilling and weeding in an environmentally friendly way.  Using a GPS signal, FarmDroid marks the placement of the crops at sowing and subsequently performs mechanical weed control, both between the rows and within the rows. The precise placement of each seed sown makes it possible to weed everything that isn’t the required crop, even before the crop germinates, thereby minimising, or completely eliminating the need for manual weed control.

In future visits, it can instantly identify what’s a weed and what is not. Unlike other field robots, FarmDroid doesn’t need banks of high-definition cameras and complex computers to identify and target weeds.  The four solar panels power a battery pack and ensure up to 24 hours of daily CO2-neutral operation, and by being independently powered, the FarmDroid FD20 can work in the field throughout the entire season.

You don’t need to monitor FarmDroid either – just leave it to get on with the job. Its light weight means it won’t destroy the soil’s microstructure and it’s light touch on service too.

Ed farms salad crops across 2000 hectares in Warwickshire and like most farmers he’s faced the operational challenge of needing to manage rising costs.  He remarked that the lack of chemistry with herbicides being withdrawn from the market and the desire to increase his carbon footprint with greener, more sustainable farming practices, coupled with a reduced labour pool brought the Farmdroid into consideration.  Weighing it up against alternative power units needing seeders or hoes attached, it resulted in an attractive, value for money solution.

After a success demonstration from T H WHITE area rep Andy Moore, and the Opico team who distribute the FarmDroid in the UK, the benefits were too enticing.  ‘This tech really does help me save money, not only with fuel consumption but halving the need for manual crop weeding through the use of automation.  With savings in herbicides, fuel, labour and machinery costs (depreciation, maintenance, tyres, etc.) the financial argument for FarmDroid was strong – and so far so good.  It’s definitely improved our operations this season’.

We are thrilled to share the success of our recent Manitou Ride and Drive event, held on November 15th and 16th at the Three Counties Showground in Malvern, Worcestershire. The 2 day event was the perfect opportunity for existing and future Manitou operators to get hands on with a number of machines.

Over the two-day event, we proudly displayed nearly 20 cutting-edge Manitou machines, featuring a diverse range of agricultural telehandlers, construction telehandlers, and industrial forklifts. The Three Counties Showground provided the perfect backdrop for visitors and industry professionals to explore and experience the latest innovations in Manitou technology.

The event saw the presence of T H WHITE’s dedicated sales representatives alongside Manitou experts from Manitou UK. Their insightful guidance allowed attendees to gain in-depth knowledge about the showcased machines, providing a comprehensive understanding of their capabilities and applications.

Showcasing Excellence

A number of the most popular machines were on show throughout the day covering all sectors from Agriculture, Construction to Industry.

The Agricultural sector was represented by the MLT737 and MLT625 to name just a few. A selection of the Agricultural spec telehandlers on the day showcased various attachments from bale grabs, buckets, muck grabs and more. The ULM (ultra light machine) was also available on the day.

The Construction sector was represented by the MRT2660 complete with remote control system, giving drivers the option to operate the machine from outside or inside the cab. Demonstrating some of the cutting-edge features that define Manitous commitment to innovation. Completing the Construction line up was the 10m MT1033 and popular MT635 amongst others.

Over to the Industrial sector, we showcased the MI25D and MI30D forklifts as well as a selection of pallet trucks including the EP15 lithium powered truck.

As farming practices evolve, our machinery needs evolve; and tractor power ratings are no exception.

As a reflection our larger average farm sizes, tractors are growing ever more powerful. Because we now have much larger farms, we may need to adjust our perspective on what makes a multi-purpose tractor.

After a number of improvements, this latest tractor from Case IH, the Optum 340 CVX Drive is no heavier than the existing 300 and 270 models but provides more power, productivity and the ability to handle a wider range of tasks. Case suggests the Optum 340 CVX Drive is ideal for high draft and power take-off applications, whether they be tillage or grassland orientated with transport also being recognised as a regular task to which it is well suited.

The Optum 340 is targeted firmly at medium to large farms and agricultural contracting businesses which require a tractor with a high power-to-weight ratio giving it the versatility to take on a wide range of tasks.

Power comes courtesy of a 6.7L Stage V FPT engine which incorporates the Hi-eSCR2 emissions reduction system. Also included is Case’s Automatic Productivity Management (APM) feature which optimises the CVXDrive ratio and engine speed to suit power output requirements. An upgraded CVXDrive transmission incorporates improvements to the hydrostatic unit and control software, driveline components, rear differential and rear PTO. Transport is an important function for many tractors and the Optum 340 is said to be equally at home on the road as in the field.

The company has embraced the concept of Tractor Implement Management (TIM), which allows certified implements to automatically control specific tractor functions and although not fitted as standard, the software can be upgraded to accommodate this feature.

The rear linkage can lift 11,058kg while the front linkage has a maximum capacity of 6,016kg. The two-speed front and four-speed rear PTOs are in line with this being a multi-purpose tractor.

Good all-round visibility and a keyless ignition fob are offered along with an automotive standard of interior trim. This new model cab is said to be one of the quietest available on the market at 66dB(A) and is well equipped with digital features, including five years AFS Connect advanced telematics.

The new AFS Vision Pro operating system is said to enable precision farming functionality, tractor systems and connectivity to match the required operating preferences.

Produced at New Holland’s centre of Harvesting Excellence in Zedelgem, Belgium, the new automation delivers advances in throughput, grain retention, grain protection and fuel efficiency over the current New Holland flagship combine CR range. The CR range is topped by the powerful CR10.90, which has held the world record for the tonnage of wheat harvested in eight hours – 797.656 tonnes – for almost a decade, since August 15, 2014.

Designed in anticipation of the way in which harvesting demands continue to evolve, and in response to customer feedback for greater capacity, higher performance and maximum protection of grain quality, this clever design ensures seasonal crop quality is protected and the following year’s crop establishment can also take place in good time and in good conditions.

This combine harvester also highlights the New Holland Twin Rotor™ technology that revolutionised the way farmers harvest and is now part of New Holland’s DNA. It’s thanks to the Twin Rotor technology that the new combine can offer the lowest grain crack on the market.

A fresh new look for CR and CX

Both CR & CX combine ranges will now be instantly identifiable, thanks to new ‘Inspired by Nature’ panel styling and decals.

A collaboration between Industrial Design and Engineering teams, together with brand and product specialists resulted in an iconic and stylish refresh of timeless design – it really is form following function.

The flow of the harvest is underlined on the exterior body panels by the dynamic blue feature that runs across the body through the various operational functions. The new look gives both ranges a similar family appearance to other machine types across New Holland’s farm equipment product range.

The host of New Holland CR Twin Rotor combine updates include:

• Upgraded seating, with a new leather-upholstered ventilated unit providing more support, plus cooling and heating.
• A new DAB+ radio providing access to a wider range of stations.
• Electronic remotely-foldable new right hand rear-view mirror for improved safety.
• Up to three cameras viewable on the in-cab terminal, which can be factory-installed in different locations on the machine
• Flotation, traction and transport benefits of tracks now available on the CR7.90 model which can be specified with 24in-wide heavy-duty belts on SmartTrax units incorporating flex technology and automatic continuous tensioning
• New options for the front axle of fully-wheeled CR combines include VF (very high flexion) 620/70 R42 dual wheels/tyres and LSW (low sidewall technology) 1250/35 R46 wide flotation units for maximum spread of weight.
• Dynamic Flow Control™ function extended to CR7.80, CR7.90 & CR 8.80 combines allowing the positions of the vanes on the two rotors to be altered and boosted on the go (now working with IntelliSense)

And finally Agritechnica also saw the innovative new weed control management feature for CR combines previewed, with 559mm (22in) rotors (CR8.90/9.90). Developed by Australian firm Seed Terminator, the unit of the same name uses multi-stage hammer mills to pulverise weed seeds along with the chaff to eliminate their ability to germinate when reaching the ground, helping users reduce weed burdens in the following crop.

The range encompasses six different sized planters each with individual features but all built with the same robust precision that Vaderstad users have come to rely on:

Reliability with the Tempo R 4-6

Tempo R 4-6 is a mounted high-speed planter available with 4 or 6 row units, and fertiliser metering as option.
The rigid frame benefits from minimal weight and reduced maintenance without compromising on excellent precision.

Tempo R can be equipped with a 1200 litre fertiliser hopper and disc fertiliser coulters.
The 3 metre wide Tempo R is mounted on the tractor’s three point linkage, making it easy to manoeuvre in the field.

Telescopic precision with the Tempo T 6-7

Tempo T is a mounted high-speed planter available with 6 or 7 row units, and fertiliser metering as an option.
The telescopic frame allows for unprecedented precision, while at the same time making the machine very easy to handle and transport.

Tempo T has a transport width between 3.3 and 3.5 metres. This gives a small turning radius and convenient transport. Tempo T can also be equipped with a 1200 litre fertiliser hopper and disc fertiliser coulters.

Precision from the Tempo F 6-8

Tempo F is a trailed high-speed planter, available with 6 or 8 row units and fertiliser application as an option. The placement and design of the support wheels maintain the seed depth in all conditions which ensures an even crop.

The wheels on Tempo F 8 are coupled as a hydraulic bogie unit – walking tandem. This ensures an even load on all wheels, giving a smoother ride on uneven ground. A trailed planter puts less weight on the tractor, leading to minimal soil compaction. The benefit of this is a healthy soil structure and an even crop emergence.

Maximum versatility with the Tempo V 6-12

Tempo V is available with 6 to 12 row units, including odd numbers. The ability to use the same machine for multiple crops often means that two traditional planters can be replaced. This increases usage and lowers the hectare costs.

Wide Lining automatically adapts the row spacing to the wheel tracks of the liquid manure spreader, without lowering the number of seeds planted on the field. In combination with the front hopper FH 2200, Tempo V is
able to combi-drill fertiliser at high speed.

Robust Capacity from the Tempo R 12-18

A rigid, mounted high-speed planter with fertiliser metering as an option. With easily adjustable row spacing, it is possible to plant numerous crops with the same machine, enabling greater usage.

The front mounted fertiliser hopper FH 2200 enables high precision combi-drilling. Equipped with transport wheels and a drawbar, Tempo R 12-18 can be easily transported between fields.

Enormous capacity and superior precision from the Tempo L 8-24

A trailed high-speed planter with an enormous capacity. Tempo L doubles the capacity of a traditional planter. Most importantly, the crop is established with higher precision.

Liquid fertiliser system and central micro granulate output via Bio Drill 500 as options.

A 3000 litre hopper for granular fertiliser is available as a compliment to the 5000 litre hopper on the top-capacity models. In addition, Tempo L can be equipped with a 2000 litre hopper for liquid fertiliser output. Despite its enormous capacity on the field, Tempo L folds to 3 metre transport width.

PROFILE 2 CL mixers have 2 vertical augers, a large hopper and feed out via a cross-conveyor. These machines are suited to herds of between 90 and 265 cattle, designed to make the most of maximum tub capacity with the lowest possible overall height.  The double-pitch angle of the auger enables quick breakdown of feed, no matter how full the machine already is.  To reduce power consumption, this unit is equipped with 6 asymmetric knives which have a “self-cleaning” effect and also have a progressive-cutting knife edge for constant torque transfer. The continuous auger helix naturally moves the fodder from the bottom to the top of the tub for even mixing with no forced movements, reducing fuel consumption during the mixing process.

The PRIMOR has been designed and developed for farmers looking for a straw bedder and feeder compatible with 50 HP tractors (70 HP for haylage bales).  It’s large capacity cuts down on handling times: 1 bale with a diameter of 2 metres, and 2 of up to 1.5 m in diameter.

The adjustable regulating system with 3 preset positions is key to its flexibility.  For difficult foodstuffs such as long fibres and haylage bales, the low positioning of the boom prevents forage from getting into the turbine, ensuring fibres are effectively and evenly distributed.  Setting the tines to the raised position allows an increase of the flow of straw into the turbine with minimal flattening. Maximum blowing distance is up to 18m.

• Production set to start in second half of 2024 at New Holland’s Alternative Fuels Centre of Excellence in Basildon, UK

New Holland announces the expansion of the brand’s alternative fuels product portfolio with the global debut of the new T7.270 Methane Power CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) tractor which takes its alternative fuel offering one step closer to becoming a full line Clean Energy brand.

Based on the T7 with PLM Intelligence platform and the latest Horizon Ultra cab, the tractor features New Hollands new ‘clean blue’ colour and the proven NEF 6.7-litre methane-fueled engine with peak torque of 1,160Nm, and produces a maximum 270hp under all conditions, offering the performance customers expect in this segment.

Greater productivity has been made possible by making full use of the T7’s larger chassis to maximise on-board gas storage. With 1,265 litres (219kg on board), the T7.270 CNG holds 178% more fuel than the T6.180 Methane Power (455 litres/79kg). The result is a tractor not only more powerful and capable of working with bigger implements, but also able to complete more working hours between refueling stops, considerably increasing productivity and range.

Because methane is a cleaner-burning fuel, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system is not required, freeing up space for fuel storage. Furthermore, the T7.270 Methane Power CNG can be used with all methane and biomethane sourced from livestock manure and slurry. It will make it the ideal solution for biodigester operators often running a fleet of multiple haulage tractors. In addition, it is suited to the demands of larger scale arable farms and contractors, and more complex commercial businesses conducting year-round varied applications with heavy-duty implements. The combination of methane power technology with proven New Holland T7 features is designed to offer potential customers a blend of low operating costs, autonomy, reliability and driver comfort. The model also features continuously variable transmission (CVT) for a smoother driving experience and a more efficient fuel consumption and caters for 18t+ trailer users.

While similar to the diesel-powered T7.270, the T7.270 Methane Power CNG differs in a few areas:

• Beneath the cab, new supports and the battery relocated to the left-hand side frees space for a larger gas tank.
• The cab itself is the award-winning Horizon Ultra, the quietest in the industry, with an interior noise level of just 66 decibels, and offering a roomy 8% more space
• Fitted with PLM Intelligence solutions, which integrates digital technologies to allow two-way transfer of machine and field data between the tractor and the MyPLM Connect online portal, allowing owners and managers to monitor machines, and dealers such as ourselves to provide remote support.

Growth in the biogas sector continues to increase with over 17,000 biogas plants in the EU. The potential for biogas is constantly increasing, particularly as many government policies are moving subsidies away from crop-fed to waste-fed AD plants.  The first production T7.270 Methane Power CNG tractors have undergone tests this summer and will be available to purchase in the second half of 2024.

Battery-powered electric tractors enter mainstream agriculture following the commercial launch of two 55kW (75hp) models. The Case IH Farmall 75C Electric and New Holland T4 Electric Power are all-electric utility tractors with the same equipment that a diesel-fueled tractor of equivalent power would have.

These two machines are unique in the industry. As fully battery-powered vehicles, they are the first zero-emission light utility tractors with no internal combustion engine.

Both machines represent New Holland and Case IH’s most recent step in their plans for electrification. Being developed in record time in the US and Italy, in partnership with Monarch Tractor – an agriculture innovator based in California, the project prioritised three goals: customer experience, extended runtime and outstanding performance, while committing to a sustainable and compact dimension.

• The industry’s first all-electric tractors in the utility segment with innovative and unique autonomous features included
• First European public showcase following unveiling at CNH Industrial’s Tech Day in Arizona in December 2022
• First milestone towards CNHi’s strategic plan for electrification

These first-generation battery electric vehicles are compatible with all conventional implements. Batteries offer excellent runtime, with up to one full day of use possible dependent on workload, and a recharge time with fast charging systems of just one hour. The tractors can also be used as a backup power source for other devices and machines and can provide energy for implements. They have telematics and other connected systems, and a couple of impressive autonomous features to make life easier for the operator – including passing through a gateway without the operator being on board, and a feature that enables an operator on foot to move the tractor without climbing aboard.

Operational comfort is also enhanced. Noise is reduced considerably, and vibration is substantially dampened. This allows for night-time operation and improves livestock wellbeing, especially when working inside covered areas like barns.

The new models are the culmination of CNH Industrial’s exclusive technology licensing agreement with Monarch Tractor, a US-based start-up founded in 2019 to develop an electric tractor with autonomous capabilities.

Familiar components

Four-wheel drive, a proven 12×12 transmission with electric power shuttle, multiple rear and mid-mounted remote hydraulic valves, and a full-size cab are among the familiar elements.

As a result, the new Case IH and New Holland models could easily be mistaken for diesel-fueled tractors – but for the charging and electric tool power sockets adjacent to the left side of the cab. Although the hood on these two groundbreaking machines now shrouds a lithium battery pack of 110kWh max, 95kWh usable capacity generating 55kW (75hp) for propulsion and hydraulic power, with 48kW (65hp) available.

Choosing to invest in robotics seems to be a popular decision for many UK farmers these days, for many different reasons. So when a robotic system forms part of a greenfield development project and a new dairy facility is conceived on a ‘blank sheet of paper’, it’s easy to see how utilising a combination of robotics can really make the benefits add up.

Addingrove Farm is a 240 acre dairy farm located near Aylesbury, with approximately 300 cows on-site and is a joint venture between P J Johnson & Sons and Chilton Home Farms Ltd which is run by the Johnson family. Together with nearby Canon Court Farm, also part of the estate, a total of nine DeLaval VMS^TM V310 robotic milking stations and a host of robotic assistants have been planned into a sizeable development scheme.

Situated on heavy clay ground where crops, unlike grass, are difficult to grow, Addingrove has naturally focused on dairy farming. The new facility went from greenfield site to state-of-the-art shed in just over a year, with DeLaval robotic equipment supplied and installed by Chris Newey and the T H WHITE Dairy team. The build commenced in January 2022 and was ready to accept cattle in March this year. With a capacity to house 220 cows, the fully-slatted shed has a huge 5.5M litre underground space. ‘You could fit a multi-storey car park under here’, Chris smiles. The excavated earth was re-used to create adjacent land banks with a series of oak tree plantations, in the interests of reaching carbon neutrality. To aid this goal further, an environmentally-friendly ‘bubbler’ slurry management system was installed to reduce the volume of methane produced, by aerating the muck – all helping to futureproof the shed from upcoming changes in methane regulations.

Prior to investing in the DeLaval VMS system, Trevor Johnson visited 17 robotic farms nationwide during an extensive research phase, ensuring the most successful products and processes were brought on-board. ‘We saw the DeLaval system as the way forward, as it clearly improved hygiene, animal welfare, productivity and ultimately, profitability’, he says.

Four robotic DeLaval VMS 310 systems were installed in early Spring and milking quickly began in mid-March. The reason for the cows successful adjustment from conventional to robotic milking is simple, according to Trevor. ‘There are no humans involved, so the cattle are very happy’, he states. ‘A natural pecking order has been set within the herd, there’s no need to force them to get milked at a certain time, and no lengthy queues or lame cows standing on concrete. They’re incredibly content and I’m delighted with how quickly they’ve adjusted.’

Indeed, ‘cow comfort’ is high on the agenda at Addingrove. Cattle lay on water beds for maximum comfort and hygiene, in what looks and feels like a five-star environment for cows. As Trevor recalls, ‘one visiting vet was quite taken with the water beds and noted how the cows were lying, commenting: ‘‘Clever cows tuck their tail under, comfy cows don’t need to. While they’re laying so comfortably, they’re actually making good milk.’’

As soon as installation was complete, it was noted that some of the cows proved to be ‘early-adopters’ – walking through all four robotic stations to try them out, before settling on a favourite machine. Trevor explains: ‘The whole idea is that during lactation, they don’t need to leave the shed other than to graze in the Summer. The mobility of the herd is very important, so the robotics, combined with the new layout, have done wonders to improve the constant flow throughout the shed.’

The upper level area at the new facility is equally impressive, containing a number of spaces to support a wide range of activities. This includes a space to sell milk direct to the public through vending machines, a fitted kitchen, a computer & CCTV room, offices, and a large 40 seater meeting room – perfect for Young Farmers and local agricultural working groups to hold gatherings – as well as providing a superb viewing gallery which overlooks the herd below.

In addition to the DeLaval VMS^TM system, T H WHITE Dairy have supplied Addingrove with a series of robotic assistants and specialist equipment to enhance overall productivity:

DeLaval OptiDuo^TM Robotic Feed Pusher: travels up and down the feed fence, pushing feed back to the cattle for easier access – keeping the feed rotated, bacteria-free, cool and fresh. This unit makes approx 8-9 active passes a day. Trevor explains, ‘The more often you push the feed, the more the cows move, the more they eat, and the more milk they generate.’

DeLaval Robotic Scraper: ‘This pushes slurry down the slats autonomously and thoroughly, with sensors built into the slatted floor that give the scraper instructions as to where to go,’ Chris points out. ‘It’s also quiet, so doesn’t bother the cows’.

DeLaval Cow brush: several brushes are on hand to provide a convenient, ergonomic and safe way for cows to scratch themselves in the shed.

Handling Race: features an automated gate opening which channels cows into a designated semi-circular area, where they receive hoof treatment, ear tagging, fly dabbing plus a dedicated footbath on the way out. Support from two staff is required to help direct the cows and carry out treatments.

DairyLight lighting: aids the cows’ sleep pattern and overall well-being. Alternating between red (for night-time) and blue/white light, helps regulate body clocks by exposing cows to a continuous spectrum of light for 16 -18 hours per day. Leads to increased yields, reduction in carbon footprint and increased profits.

Sophie grew up on the family farm in Lea, just outside Malmesbury.  A mixed operation of cereals crops and a suckler herd of cattle, she has been around farm machinery and operations all her life and is very much at home with understanding the requirements of tending land and animals.  Having always loved children, she studied childcare at Cirencester college then switched into a two-year Agricultural apprenticeship at Lackham.  On completion she was lucky enough to find a local nannying post which also allowed her to continue supporting farm operations at home as a valued member of the family team. Sophie was also fortunate enough to do her apprenticeship at a neighbouring family farm where she helped rear their calves on and off for 6 years.

As the children Sophie looked after grew up, she felt it was time for a change.  Her attraction to T H WHITE is built on its family values, its size and diversity allowing for career progression and growth.  Her love for the outdoors and knowledge of machinery made it the perfect fit.  One she says is ‘An amazing opportunity she should grab with both hands to make a success of’.

In her spare time Sophie is heavily involved in the Young farmers community being a member of the Malmesbury club before her teens.  She’s held various club positions over the years including club chairman and county rally chairman for Wiltshire YFC. Sophie has also been heavily involved in public speaking and stock judging too.  In fact, she’s appeared at national finals for both activities.

Happy Retirement to Dave Houghton – A celebration of a long and fruitful career and a heartfelt goodbye from a friend.

Dave studied Agriculture at Shrewsbury Tech and began his career at Murley Agricultural Services as a mobile Agricultural Technician in the early 1980’s.  He worked from the back of a Ford Escort van that he drove like a rally car!   Pictured below in 1976 he had just passed his City & Guilds Agricultural Mechanic Certificate as the only student to achieve 3 distinctions, aged 19.

Dave honed his driving skills rallying numerous cars with varying success at his local car club, before taking on the less risky roles of course closing and organising events with his wife Jayne.  Dave followed this passion with a short sabbatical in 1989, leaving to build racing engines with a successful engine builder Roy Millington, but it wasn’t long before the draw of agriculture called, and Dave was back in the Murley fold taking on a Foreman role at Stourport.

I was lucky enough to meet Dave in October 1989 as a young naive semi-skilled agricultural engineer.  I soon learnt that the more scared you looked, the faster Dave drove!  Dave coached many team members at that time and was an inspiration to all the young guys in the workshop.  He led from the front and would always help and mentor anyone who showed a similar passion to him.  But ‘on-the-tools’ was where he felt most at home – probably why he was soon out of the office and back in his van on the road, doing what he loved.

I remember one evening, Dave called at my house after 8pm to collect me to head out to a combine breakdown, much to my mother’s bemusement. This was typical of his commitment. We headed off (flat out, of course) into the dusk to tackle a combine clutch. We rigged up a flood light and cracked on.  For Dave it was always about getting the job done and important to him to keep his customers happy.  I recall another example of his commitment to a regular customer running a New Holland FX forager that had header damage.  Parts were collected and Dave, Will and myself worked through the night to get the customer up and running. It was always about customer satisfaction for Dave, and doing his best for them.

Around this time Dave purchased his Lotus Esprit, a true super car of its time. His pride and joy, Dave kept it on the road for quite a few years, keeping it running with his can-do attitude – the epitome of improvise and overcome.  At the same time he was supporting his friend Richard by building an Astra rally car from a brand-new shell to a fully competitive car.  No mean feat with Dave living in Shropshire and Richard in Scotland.

Dave is a well-respected engineer in the Worcestershire and Shropshire area among farmers.  Always trusted – if he said it needed a part, you knew that that’s what was required and if a repair was going to take a while. Dave would see it through.  Of course jobs didn’t always go to plan but Dave would not faulter, head down, he’d carry on, never beaten.  His tenacity, one of his greatest qualities!

I moved to our Evesham depot in 2003 returning in December 2006 to effectively become Dave’s boss.  A strange outcome for both of us but he didn’t change –  it didn’t matter what job I gave him, where it was or what time of day, he was always up for the challenge.  Dave was the first person I called with the news that T H WHITE were acquiring Murley Agricultural.  I remember how positive he was about the prospect of a new beginning, always looking towards the future, embracing the T H WHITE values that mirrored his own, always there with PMA and a fist bump.

Despite being the oldest man in the shop, Dave is probably the fittest. Pilates and working out with Jayne in the gym are more recent hobbies along with mountain biking with his brothers, playing on their bikes like they were teenagers again.

Dave and Jayne have been happily married for over 40 years and have two amazing children, Becky and Gregg of whom Dave is extremely proud, but very modest of their success.  Both Dave and Jane worked hard to support them through university and are always there to help fix a car or house when required.

Recently Dave and Jayne have found a new passion, a VW camper. They are regularly away enjoying the beautiful scenery that Britain has to offer, walking and exploring the countryside.  I hope now that as they embark on retirement Dave never stops having adventures, travelling the world and living a long and happy life.  After 43 years of service to Agricultural Engineering he deserves it, maybe now though, his pace won’t be flat out!

Dave you’ll be missed by many friends at T H WHITE.  As my colleague, my mate, and my best friend, I’ll miss you most.  All the best!

Every year, as part of our ongoing commitment to supporting farmers with the latest skills and expertise, we seek out and take on engineering apprentices in all our divisions.

One division that takes on apprentices every year is our Agricultural operation. T H WHITE agricultural apprentices work with us for four years, learning key skills associated with agricultural machinery and repair. All apprentices learn on the job in our service depots and also with blocks of learning at Reaseheath College, one of the UK’s leading specialist land-based colleges which although based in Cheshire, teaches UK wide. Reaseheath has some of the best specialist facilities and resources in the country, thanks to a continuing £80 million investment across campus. This includes £8 million Advanced Engineering and Agri-Tech Centre, £6 million Sports Sciences and Performance Academy, £8 million National Centre for Horticulture, the Environment and Sustainable Technology, £7 million Food Centre and a £13 million halls of residence.

Our current year 3 apprentices have recently finished their final learning block at Reaseheath, bringing months of specialist college training to a close. There were 27 apprentices in their year group at Reaseheath, who are from a wide range of dealers based across the country, including smaller independent companies and large organisations.

To mark the end of the college term, Reaseheath presents certificates and some special awards for excelling students. Just five special awards are presented each year, and we are delighted to announce that two of our apprentices: Finn Jones and Will Hatch each received one of these special awards from the college. Reaseheath acknowledged this as a massive achievement: Two out of only five T H WHITE apprentices won two out of the five special award categories, allocated between the total group of 27 students.

Finn won ‘Best Overall Student’ demonstrating excellence throughout his apprenticeship programme in all areas of ‘Knowledge, Practical Skills and Behaviors’. and Will won the ‘Endeavour Award’ for the apprentice who demonstrated the biggest learning progression from the the start to the end of the programme, finally excelling in all areas at his course completion.

Reaseheath held their own presentation day for the students, but we would like to acknowledge the achievements made by all five of our students, including Liam Carney, Walter Perry & Jake Wain, who have all worked hard over the last 3 years and were honoured by certificates to mark successful completion of the college based part of their training.

They are now completing course work prior to taking their End Point Assessment from September onwards.

Simon Holmes, our Technical Manager said of this year’s apprentices; “We are very proud of all our capable young apprentices and are delighted that the college has recognised their hard work, focus and skills. We are especially pleased that Finn and Will have won additional awards as both have been excellent apprentices, showing focus and determination. To honour the awards, T H WHITE have bought two pairs of tickets for both Finn and Will to each enjoy a day out at The Goodwood Revival historic motor race with a friend.”

In farms all over Britain, a quiet revolution is taking place.

Not a revolution in the way we drill or grow or even harvest (although all these processes have undergone advancement in recent years) but a revolution in our approach to co-existing with other species that have come to rely on our farmed output as much as we do, namely the insects that we usually refer to as pests.

Once upon a time, insects that preyed upon our crops would have been attacked through the use of strong chemicals, the aim being to wipe out local populations to create pest-free fields. This approach not only attacked the pest we were targeting, but also affected benign and even helpful insects; (for example neonicotinoid seed treatments and the subsequent unintended negative effects on Bees).

Now the use of other methods of pest management are offering gentler ways to allow us to coexist with insect species that depend on the output from our farms. One of these approaches is companion planting, which works by placing plants that are unattractive or harmful to the pest next to the potential food source. This confuses the pest into moving on rather than making a home. Although gentler to benign insects who might inhabit the farm, this plan is still one of removing the pest rather than accommodating it.

Another approach is much more revolutionary: Plant breeding, the age old science of changing the traits of plants in order to produce desired characteristics, is now increasingly utilised to support crops to better survive pest attacks, allowing the insects that prey on our crops to continue to live on the plant, while maintaining our harvest. This represents a huge shift in our view towards insect pests.

Advances in oil seed rape are a great example of this process. The cabbage stem flea beetle is a known pest for this plant that can be most damaging at its larval stage, where it eats channels through the plant’s main stem. This causes the plant to tilt and fall, making it almost impossible to harvest. Now, newer, approved seed variations of oil seed rape are bred for much thicker, fast growing stems, which allow the plant to harbour – and even feed –  the cabbage stem larvae while staying healthy and upright.

This new collaborative approach to pest management, which creates a welcoming feeding environment for insects and allows fields to be productive while being alive with wildlife, shows a huge change in farming attitudes; and cements what is arguably the modern farmer’s most important role: as the main custodian of Britain’s wildlife and countryside.

Lawrence Rich has been running the 250 acre, family-owned Stud Farm in Gloucestershire with his brother Ben, since 2000. Providing top quality silage, hay, haylage and straw to the equine community, Lawrence knows true pedigree when he sees it – and his latest purchase of a Manitou agricultural telehandler is no exception!

Having established themselves as successful farmers in their own right, the brothers set up BG & LD Rich to complement their farming, offering a valuable service to the local agricultural community. Bale grabs, forks and buckets are tools we rely on daily, as much as the machine itself,’ explains Lawrence. 

Over the years, Lawrence has purchased a significant number of machines from T H WHITE Agriculture, calling on the advice and expertise of senior sales representative Andy Daffurn, based at Toddington branch. As well as the MLT 741, Andy has recently supplied Lawrence with several New Holland tractors and a New Holland Big Baler 890 Plus.

Yesterday, a damp, chilly April morning, saw well over 60 dairy farmers from around 40 farms arrive at the Jeynes family farm to see the V300 milking robots in action.  The Jeynes family have installed two of the latest milking robots from DeLaval and are so pleased with the results of the machines, they are adapting another barn to house a 3rd robot.

The DeLaval V300’s three dimensional camera connects to the cow faster and more efficiently than other milking robots, allowing an easier, more relaxed throughput.

A smooth and quiet action makes the VMS V300 series a positive experience for cows and for workers; and without the need to spend 8 to 10 hours a day milking, farmers and staff now have the freedom to be more productive on other tasks that benefit farm profitability.

The V300 range is also a true voluntary milking system that works with nature to foster healthier, calmer cows, which means better longevity, productivity, reproduction and yield. With a dedicated preparation cup and four ICAR approved milk meters (one for each teat), the vacuum, pulsation and take off are adjusted automatically for each teat, resulting in superior udder health.

Recently apprentices from across the T H WHITE Group took part in our annual apprentice review day which has been running for over 50 years!

The day saw apprentices gather at our Devizes Group Office and headquarters to Palfinger UK.  The candidates represented our Agriculture, Groundcare, Lorry Cranes and Energy Fire & Security divisions, across the various year groups of their placements.

The Assessors were extremely impressed with the high calibre of apprentices coming through our business.  Participants attended a series of technical interviews and were then hosted by Alan Johnson, Managing Director of Palfinger UK who organised a demonstration and ‘drive slot’ of our mighty Palfinger Crawler Crane.

Candidates technical scores combined with their ‘on the job’ assessment from each of their Managers contributed to the final results.

Our apprenticeship program is a great way to get industry experience and skills, in a hands-on working environment, suitable for any age from school leavers aged 16 and above. With no age barrier, it is never too late to get started. Combining a mix of on the job learning and academic modules from specialist colleges for each given sector, our apprenticeships are a great way to get started in a career with us.

This year, the increase of apprentices we are taking on across 7 of our divisions and the introduction of new apprenticeships, there is an abundance of opportunities for new applicants to gain specialist knowledge of an industry segment. With many previous applicants going on to have rewarding long term careers with us working their way up to management level, future job prospects for our apprentices are substantial.

THE ROLL BALER COMBI

With its fixed chamber, higher strength roller design and wide pick up of 2.3m, this combi is a gem.  It’s repeatedly quoted as the best choice of fixed chamber baling on offer for livestock farm and contract operators.  The unit is able to use both net or film to bind the bale, before transferring to the film wrapping table.

A New Holland combine harvester with a MacDon draper header.

A wet year, a low crop and an uneven field. A nightmare scenario for any combine operator worrying about the time spent going backwards rather than forwards in harvest.

Standard combine headers are bigger than ever, evolving over the years so some are now up to 45 feet wide. As the ground undulates under the combine, a wider header can leave one side of the cutter too high for the crop while the other edge is scraping ground, in some cases bulldozing along, ripping up the crop and the earth with it. This means the operator has to reverse the combine, then stop and climb out, clean the header, climb back in and start again. Not ideal at the best of times, worse if you are harvesting while watching the clock, up against the forecast of an incoming downpour.

Jonathan Kerr, Manager of the long established 1,500 acre farm JM Strong and Partners in Pewsey, Wilts, found a solution for this all too common issue when he saw a demo of the MacDon Flex header from T H WHITE very early in 2022.  “Two crops which are hard to cut are spring barley and peas. These grow close to the ground so encourage combines to drag and get caught on undulating ground. We had a demo for the MacDon header with spring peas which were not only close to the ground but very flat; so the demo was quite challenging”. Jonathan continues “The MacDon coped very well harvesting the peas during the demo and really showed the benefit of a flexing header.  We were surprised that the combine was always going forward with no reversing”. He continues “After the demo we ordered the new header and our expectations for the 2022 harvest were pretty high! It was difficult to keep those sensible, but thankfully the header has fully lived up to those high expectations during 2022 so I am very happy”.

The product specialists at MacDon are innovative agricultural technologists leading the field in farming solutions. The FD2 header allows flexing so it can undulate with the ground, alleviating bulldozing and allowing a closer cut. MacDon’s Active Float System is now coupled with up to 70% more flex for a harvesting experience like never before. Flex-Float Technology® gets turned up with MacDon’s optional ContourMax™ Contour Wheels. These wheels allow the header to follow the field’s contours, leaving a consistent stubble height while cutting from 1 to 18 inches+ off the ground.

Jonathan adds “Using the MacDon makes harvest more enjoyable. Like all farmers we like new kit and we have found this header increases our output. That means two things: firstly that we are completing more fields every day by doing things just that little bit faster which makes everyone happier. Secondly, the MacDon is producing a higher crop output as the header is presenting the crop to the combine in a better way. The crop goes in forwards which means it’s threshing more easily and creating an increase in output. 2022 was our first year with the FD2 and we saw more yield every day of harvest. The FD2 is also making us much faster. Previously we would cut around 1 hectare per hour, but the Flex header cuts 40 hectares in 10 hours – which allows us to be four times faster to cut. There are even other advantages too because now I can grow more spring barley and not be worried about it flattening which of course helps to tackle black grass and saves more time and money.  All in all, we are very happy with progress so far”.

Equine coat, hoof and health care products from Car & Day & Martin available from our Marlborough Country Store.We all love warm weather, but as the temperature rises, flies are an increasing problem, especially for anyone who keeps horses.  Carr & Day & Martin are a well known British brand who have been making equine care products since their inception in 1765. Does fly spray kill flies?

A common misconception is that fly sprays work to kill flies. Although to an equine this would be an ideal scenario, flies play a vital role in pollination and as well as in the food chain. Flies don’t have eyes, they instead find horses through their bodily secretions such as lactic acid from sweat and carbon dioxide that humans and horses breathe out. Therefore, fly repellents work to mask these smells so make the horse ‘ invisible’ to being detected by the fly.

One of the best known fly repellent ingredients, is DEET. This is a synthetic compound that was originally made for soldiers trekking through the rain forest in 1946. It’s not so well known that it is nearly scentless. DEET has a fantastic action over midges – the pesky flies that cause Sweet Itch, among other flying and biting insects. DEET confuses flies, making it harder for the horse to be found and therefore bitten.

Flygard extra strength from Carr & Day & Martin is currently the strongest DEET based fly spray on the UK market coming in at 20% DEET which could last up to 12 hours.

Do natural fly sprays even work?

With so many different formulations it can be an expensive quest to find a natural but effective approach to fly control. Citronella has been used in fly control for generations in the equine industry. However in recent times, it has been deemed an ineffective fly repellent ingredient. This is due to the lack of scientific evidence to prove it has an effect on flies. This doesn’t mean citronella cannot be used in fly sprays. Under EU law, a natural fly spray must contain another active ingredient that has a proven action on flies to be classed as a fly repellent. This could be an ingredient such as lesser known Citriodiol. This is a completely natural compound that comes from eucalyptus oil. It has been proven to have a similar action over flies to DEET, making it an ideal natural alternative. So if you’re a fan of citronella, don’t fear! Just double check there is another ingredient listed on the back.

If you’re still sceptical about natural fly sprays working, pay close attention to the strength of the active ingredient which is normally displayed as a percentage on the back of the bottle. This can give an indication of how long the product will last, with the higher the concentration meaning the product will be longer lasting. Citromax from Carr & Day & Martin is currently the strongest Citriodiol based fly spray on the market, offering an effective natural option.

When the Norfolk dairy business Taylor IMS decided to close activities, a pledge was made by T H WHITE to invest in the Attleborough based operation and take on the additional territory to support dairy farmers on the eastern side of the UK.

With this extended DeLaval territory, T H WHITE will now be providing Dairy sales, service and parts from coast to coast as the largest southern dealer in the UK.  Dairy depots in Frome, Somerset and Huntley, Gloucestershire will be supplemented with the additional facility in Attleborough, Norfolk resulting in a new trading areas stretching from Wales to Norfolk.

Adding Attleborough and this extended territory aligns with strategic aspirations to grow our Dairy network, assist farmers in the region and create a more sustainable business, giving us the scale to better meet customer needs.  Taylor IMS is closing its business activities and we are pleased to confirm that we have employed Taylor IMS staff to continue to support existing customers and grow our business in the east of the UK.

We welcome Steve Taylor looking after capital sales, Craig Taylor and David Webb as VMS Dairy Technicians with Craig also coordinating service work, and Ben Taylor joins our Dairy van sales team.

John Nightingale is a 4th generation farmer who has been used to seeing John Deere branded tractors operate on his 200 hectare, ‘Fir Tree Farm’ near Coventry, for much of his adult life. However, all that changed last year with the purchase of a New Holland T6.180 Dynamic Command – adding a powerful, highly-efficient ‘blue power’ cat among the pigeons!

Although not a regular T H WHITE customer, John has been well acquainted with our Warwick based New Holland sales specialist, Paul Simpson, for over 20 years. And in that time, the historical ties to the incumbent tractor supplier, loosened a little for John. “When it came to my previous two purchases, I was not overly impressed with the product or the dealership” he says. “I was looking for an answer and Paul very kindly provided one. He left me the New Holland T6 to try for a few days – and it didn’t take long for myself and my team to make our feelings known!”

Citing a combination of reasons, from powerful performance across haulage and cultivation work, to outstanding levels of comfort within the cab, John says it was ultimately the fuel-efficiency that proved the deciding factor. “The New Holland brand is well known for being highly efficient, but thanks to the engine’s electronic fuel delivery system and it’s DC gearbox, the fuel economy of the T6.180 was something we just couldn’t ignore,” he explains.

John has had the machine for just over twelve months now, and is suitably impressed with the cost efficiencies made to date. Approximately 800 working hours were put in over the season, and having an auto-steer feature retro-fitted also contributed to the overall efficiency. “I had to call Paul last week to say thank you for saving me so much money on diesel this past year!” he smiles.

No doubt Paul will be introducing John to further discoveries within the New Holland range at some point in the near future.

Keeping service costs to a minimum by using an independent technician when budgets are tight is a no-brainer, right? WRONG!

In fact, you could easily end up spending more and suffering increased down time – with a big impacts on your productivity and profitability. Here’s why…

No matter how good an independent technician may be, he is just that – a one-man band with a single premises, most likely a single service vehicle for callouts and limited access to the latest diagnostics and tools. His time is not only split between all his customers, but he also has to take care of all the back office tasks involved in running any business. And when he is on holiday, off sick or tied up with personal commitments, there will be times when he is not available at all.

That means when you book your machine in for service you will take your place in the queue. When your machine does have its day in the workshop its quite likely that the technician won’t have the necessary parts in stock so there will be a wait while they are ordered. And what are the chances of being offered a courtesy machine while yours is out of action? Virtually none.

We have a 24/7 response service with out-of-hours support and in 90 per cent of cases we can achieve a first-time fix, whereas an independent is just one technician in one vehicle who may well need to make return visits to sort out any problems.

If one of our technicians encounters a problem he can’t immediately solve, he is able to draw upon the extensive knowledge and support across all the workshops and parts departments in our 10 agricultural branches. Our technicians attend the most up-to-date manufacturer training days for existing and new products, backed up by the latest service bulletins and resolution fixes for common faults, but independent traders are far less likely to be up to speed in these areas. We also operate a Master Technician programme to encourage expansion of technical knowledge and professional development and have a regular intake of apprentices to invest in training the next generation.

The advent of machinery telematics means that we can now see error codes from our customers’ machinery, in many cases enabling us to achieve remote fixes or to be pre-prepared for site visits, taking the correct parts for an immediate repair. Independents, on the other hand, tend not to have invested in the necessary technology to view the telematics.

One aspect that is often raised when discussing cost control is the use of genuine manufacturer or supplier remanufactured parts rather than third party aftermarket parts. Does this matter, and is the small additional cost worth it? The answer is undoubtedly YES, and T H WHITE always uses genuine parts, of which we have a huge stockholding with a 95+ per cent pick rate. Not only do non-genuine parts often lead to reduced reliability and shorter change intervals, but they can invalidate warranties – a real false economy.

If you need to undertake some intensive drilling this Spring, the Kverneland Tine Seeder or ts-drill for short could be the perfect solution and we have one in stock ready to go.

Designed to work in both wet and dry soil conditions with ease, this drill’s five rows of passive tools allow for accurate seed placement, compaction and sowing in a single pass, even with high amounts of crop residue and in extreme working conditions.  It’s intelligent arrangement of seeding tines in off-set configuration, reduces tractor power requirement and ensures uniform seed depth placement whatever the conditions.  Seeding depth is easily adjusted without the need for tools by use of spacers on the wheels mounted in the centre of the frame, which in turn guarantees that they will adapt perfectly to the ground contours and the sowing depth is simply more precise.  Effective seed covering after sowing is ensured by the twin row precision following harrow section which is fitted as standard.

An ELDOS metering device accurately measures the required volume of seed by the distinctive rotor and discharges it into the seed injector where it is mixed with the air stream and then conveyed through the diffusor tube and the seed delivery hoses to the coulters. The large hopper capacity of 1700 litres reduces set up time and the whole unit can be electronically controlled by a range of steering systems from the Focus 3, to the IsoMatch Tellus Go and IsoMatch Tellus Pro.

The Sky Easy Drill is specifically designed as a no-till in both arable and grassland settings. It works equally well in minimum tillage conditions, on consolidated ploughed soil or when drilling into cover crops so is one of the few drills that can be truly advocated as a direct drill, a mintill drill and a grassland and cover crop drill too!

The four hoppers allow differing products to be drilled at two different depths. Having first joined T H WHITE Agriculture in 2018, and following a brief spell at Murley’s, Ian Griffiths is delighted to be back in the fold at our Stourport branch – as the newly-promoted Agricultural Service Manager!

Ian’s journey began with a land-based technology course at Lackham College, whilst working at a local Case/JCB dealer in the Cotswolds. He then took on a role as a service engineer at our Knockdown depot, where he learnt the ins-and-outs of a wide variety of machinery – rebuilding gearboxes and servicing power-units on everything from combines and balers, to tractors and telehandlers. Joining from Lackham with his twin, Scott (who still works at our Knockdown workshop), their skills and experience were quickly put to good use.

However, the earth quite literally moved for Ian after meeting his partner – relocating to Herefordshire in 2020 and settling down to life on his partners family farm. With the move, came a new employer – the local machinery specialists, Murley’s. But not a change in role, as Ian continued to service agricultural machinery, expanding his broad base of machinery knowledge further still.

And as luck would have it, Murley’s agricultural business was acquired by T H WHITE a year later, seeing Ian reunited with his former employer! “It’s an exciting time to be at T H WHITE, Stourport,” says Ian. “I’m embarking on a new role as Service Manager, and lots of refurbishment work has just been started, including plans for new offices and meeting spaces.”

As for the role itself, Ian believes it will mean more focus can be given to both Agricultural and Construction servicing – allowing Chris Walters, who previously managed the servicing of both divisions, to focus solely on the Construction side. “I have a great team of experienced engineers to work with, which I’d like to grow,” continues Ian. “I plan to add several new apprenticeships over the coming months, to further support our customers.”

As well as relishing the challenges of his new managerial role, Ian also likes the challenge of the outdoors – recently hiking up Mount Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis with his partner and their dogs.

Kuhn has added a new lighter weight and compact drill to its Venta range of pneumatic seeders.

Available initially as the 3 metre Venta 320, this new 100 series machine is designed for tractors in the 120 to 150 horsepower range. With an 850-litre hopper as standard, the drill has the option of an extension that increases capacity to 1,150 litres.  The Venta 320 can be used in combination with Kuhn’s HRB 302, HRB 303 or HR 304 power harrows by mounting on the power harrow frame, with the seeding bar guided by the roller frame. This results in the seeding depth being independent of the working depth of the harrow and excellent ground following is maintained.

Centralised adjustment of depth and pressure makes machine set-up extremely easy.  The seed bar comprises 20 or 24 rows of single disc elements, each with an internal cast iron coulter positioned at the front of the disc. This proven concept provides constant cleaning of the disc whilst ensuring precise placement of seed in the furrow. Seeding unit pressure of up to 32kg is applied.  The seed blower on the Venta 320 is driven by the tractor hydraulic circuit and is therefore independent of the PTO driving the power harrow.  The drill fan’s turbine rotation has been optimised in line with seed size, results in a reduce oil requirement – down from 35 litres/minute to 26 litres/minute.

Electrically powered volumetric metering on the drill helps to facilitate a wide operating range of between 1.5 to 430kg/ha and ensures all seed sizes are handled with precision. With the QS2 control unit, seed rate can be adjusted from the tractor cab, and calibration is easily accessible and simple to carry out.

The Venta 320 has a spacious loading platform that provides safe access to the hopper from the side. A covering harrow with universal tines is fitted as standard, and the basic model comes with integral lighting and signalling kit. What’s not to like with the up-spec’d solution – this light, efficient drill could be a game changer for you.

T H WHITE Agriculture’s Demonstration and Precision Farming Support team offers a mix of hands-on product demos together with specialist technical advice. It has now been strengthened by two new recruits to help serve a growing demand for more machine demos, installations and Precision Land Management™ (PLM) & Advanced Farming Systems™ (AFS) set-ups, across even more locations.

Agricultural specialist Mike Quilter is recognised as the team’s founding member, having initiated the first phase of demos in 2018, and seeing them consistently well received by customers ever since (some of you may be readers of his regular ‘Out on demo with Mike’ blog on White’s World). Prior to that, Mike spent around ten years working in the T H WHITE workshops at Andoversford and then later at Toddington, getting to know the ins-and-outs of a vast range of machinery. Focusing on demos meant he could answer a growing need, giving potential purchasers the opportunity to get up-close and personal with a machine, experience the features and benefits first-hand, and assess overall performance and suitability before making a commitment.

A typical demo normally involves Mike putting a machine through its paces with the customer, starting off with a full walk-around to introduce the main features. He’ll then explain technical systems and answer any specific set-up questions, often operating in a ‘live’ working environment. Once customer confidence levels rise suitably, the machine is then normally left with the customer to operate independently for an agreed period of time. “Written reports, photographic documentation and feature articles are often required as part of the process, so coupled with the increasing volume of new machinery coming into the market, it was deemed high-time that this very popular service was supported with additional resource and a revised geographical structure”, says Mike.

Mike has performed a considerable number of demos over the last four years – one of the most memorable being an appearance in Ally Hunter Blair’s TV show ‘Born Mucky: Life On The Farm’. “This involved a New Holland combine and a MacDon header” he recalls. “We spent a day filming in beautiful Ross-on-Wye, cutting soya beans during the first lockdown in 2020. A strange but satisfying experience that I’ll never forget!” he adds.

So, as of October this year, Mike has been joined by new team members Tom Keen (demos and installations) and David McLellan (precision farming support), with the aim of providing a more proactive service, over a wider area. Mike will cover the Northern half of the locality, with a focus on specific T H WHITE depots (Toddington, Hereford, Stourport & Warwick), and Tom the Southern half (Marlborough, Knockdown, Frome & Stockbridge). Tom will also offer precision farming support for Marlborough, Frome and Stockbridge. David will cross the locality but will focus more on Knockdown and into South Wales.

Tom Keen joined T H WHITE as an apprentice agricultural technician in 2010 and has never looked back. Having grown up on a farm, he felt the role was tailor made for him, and has strengthened his natural skill-sets over the years by working on a broad range of machines and undertaking some first-class training programmes. In fact, Tom’s most recent course was just last month, spending two days with New Holland’s technical sales division, brushing up on CR and CX combines and balers. He has also attended in-depth courses with Case IH covering AFS systems, and specialist Manitou MRT telehandler courses at Hartpury College. Now with a schedule brimming with demos, installations and PLM and AFS set-ups – the full spectrum of services his new team has to offer – 2023 looks set to be another successful year for Tom.

David McLellan (better known as Fred) has been part of T H WHITE Agriculture for around 8 years, having spent most of his life in and around the farming industry. He gained his nickname thanks to his exploits on the rugby pitch as a young man – and if you want to know ‘why Fred’, you’ll need to ask him directly! Having operated combines on farms in Australia, New Zealand and the US, he built up a detailed working knowledge of a wide variety of machinery, and was at the forefront of the early GPS systems on his return to the UK in the 1990’s. He’s currently working on the installation of a full-yield mapping and telematics system, with secondary display, on a New Holland CR9.90 harvester. He joins the team offering high-quality precision farming support in PLM-based systems, as well continuing with his day-to-day technical role.

Senior Leadership Change in the Agriculture, Construction, Dairy & Groundcare Divisions

 A few months ago, Division Director David Rapkins was presented with the unexpected opportunity to take up the position of New Holland Business Director for the UK, ROI, Nordics & Baltics at CNHi. This is a fantastic opportunity for David, and one that does not come around very often. As such, David has decided to leave T H WHITE at the end of the year to take up the role.

The Board of T H WHITE are confident that our relationship with CNHi will continue to strengthen with David’s appointment and we express our thanks to him for his hard work and contribution in helping to modernise and improve our business, something the new Leadership team will continue.

We are delighted to announce that Adrian Lovegrove will be promoted to Division Director with overall responsibility for the Agriculture, Construction, Dairy, and Groundcare Divisions, which also includes our Country Store and Garden Machinery operations.  This change will be effective from 1st December 2022, enabling a smooth handover of responsibilities by the year-end. Adrian will be primarily based at our Knockdown branch and report directly to me. He will take on all of David’s responsibilities, including the leadership of 260 personnel across 10 sites. The overall headcount at T H WHITE is now about 600.

Adrian has made an exceptional contribution to the business through his effort and commitment over the last 12 years. He has knowledge of all aspects of the divisions, having worked closely with many of our customers, staff, and suppliers in the role of Operations Director since July 2019. Before working at T H WHITE, Adrian spent 15 years at CNHi in the Agricultural and Construction sectors, working in Europe, Middle East, Africa & CIS countries in senior operational and leadership roles across technical product support, aftersales operations, sales, and dealer network development.

Said Mabrouk has been in post as a Dairy Engineer with T H WHITE Dairy in Frome for almost two months now – and is loving every minute of it.

Already, he’s found himself busy with multiple projects ranging from the design of heat recovery and refrigeration systems through to installations, service breakdowns and site visits. He is slotting into his new team environment nicely it seems, complementing the skills already present in the team with his broad-based M&E experience in commercial refrigeration and air conditioning.

“I’m a team player that likes to problem-solve,” he says. “I’m currently working closely with my colleagues, making up a team of three. We all like to share ideas and pool our knowledge, so this is the ideal way to start my new role. I’m looking forward to undergoing more company training over the coming weeks, and learning about our customers needs in more detail.”

Before life at T H WHITE, Said was self-employed for 15 years, working on a variety of commercial refrigeration projects. Prior to that, he studied at Bath College, gaining several qualifications in M&E and H&S.

Said lives in Filton, Bristol with his wife, daughter and pet cat. In his spare time, he likes to keep fit by going to the gym as well as swimming whenever he can – all fitted around regular shopping trips with his daughter!

Reg Pearce’s team at his 480-acre family run Mill Farm in Wotton-Under-Edge, Gloucestershire, are a very happy team indeed. Not only do they get to work with a range of New Holland machines, they’re also able to experience ‘the jewel in the crown’ – the all-new T8.435 GenesisTM Blue Power, the first of its kind sold in the UK by T H WHITE.

As a third-generation farmer, Reg has been part of the family run set-up for over four decades. These days, he focuses on pure arable, producing a mix of wheat, oilseed rape, barley, peas, and beans. Over the years, he’s bought a variety of tractor brands and started a relationship with nearby T H WHITE in the 1970’s. He settled on the New Holland brand around 30 years ago and has never looked back since.

Reg took delivery of the T8.435 Genesis in February 2022, having traded in its predecessor, a 2010 model T8050. He felt the time had come to take advantage of the huge benefits in overall efficiency, power distribution and reduced soil compaction offered by the new T8 Genesis range. The SmartTraxTM model was chosen for the simple reason that with a move away from the plough towards minimal cultivation techniques, it became important to reduce soil compaction by taking cleaner turns, to incur less overall damage to topsoil structures throughout his site. “The half-track SmartTrax is highly versatile and ideally designed to help us keep soil damage to a minimum – the weight and power distribution are so even, there’s no smearing when performing many tight turns out in the headland,” he says.

Farm Manager Andy Goodenough was also hugely impressed with the latest addition to the fleet. “It is a highly stable, powerful, manoeuvrable machine with great traction – it doesn’t allow you to over-run or create mechanical stress in any way. The ground conditions we experienced this year have not been seen since 1976, so we’ve not yet been able to run the T8 in the typically boggy conditions we can get here in the foot of the Cotswolds – although we’re confident that the way it floats over topsoil, it will perform successfully in any conditions we’re likely to face.”

Reg adds: “When the conditions are right, we go. The highly advanced T8 model will be integral to us being able to respond in whatever window we need to – giving us the power we need without fear of damaging soil structures or reducing our productivity levels.”

• Customer-to-Vehicle Connectivity – this will allow Reg to run his farm business from the cab, the farm office or even the other side of the world.
• Dealer-to-Vehicle Connectivity – helping to minimise downtime with proactive support, remote monitoring, diagnostic, and in-field software updates.
• Advisor-to-Vehicle Connectivity – to keep Reg in touch with agronomists and other experts, improving decision-making on the move.

Tom Monk runs his family owned Rookley Farm in Stockbridge with an eye on efficiency and a healthy passion for innovation in seed growing. As part of a long-standing approach to getting the best out of his farm machinery, Tom is delighted to name a self-propelled crop sprayer from British manufacturers Chafer as the latest addition to his fleet – having been heavily involved throughout the purchasing process, from detailing its customised design to seeing it roll off the production line!

At 1,300 hectares, Rookley Farm has been in the Monk family for 3 generations. During the 1960’s it was a mixed farm, dealing mainly in arable, dairy and beef. The 1970’s saw a move towards grass seed and it began to specialise in seed production from the 1980’s onwards. The farm now has its own dedicated seed plant and produces mainly seed crops with some commercial crops, such as linseed and oilseed rape.

When it came to choosing the Chafer brand, Tom was very clear on the associated benefits. “Apart from the prestige involved in buying British, we wanted to hit the ground running and it was hugely beneficial for us to have a custom-made product set up the way we wanted from the off. Not to mention the easy access to detailed product knowledge and plenty of spare parts just around the corner,” he says.

The 4000L model Interceptor boasts a 32m boom, with a 4m turning circle.

A definite up-tick in productivity is expected, as the new Interceptor is widely recognised as a highly efficient machine. Tom traded his previous sprayer, a 2017 Sands Horizon model, and has already noticed increased efficiencies including quicker, easier filling and a vast improvement in traction.

“The CVT transmission was also very impressive,” continues Russell, “with the Interceptor handling any slopes easily when fully loaded, giving us a very controlled ride – especially when combined with the automatic boom levelling capability.” AF Monk’s main spraying operative, Aaron Davis, felt equally impressed by the Chafer, particularly with the cab design. “The operating environment is very spacious, comfortable and quiet too, with excellent visibility,” he commented. “This will be so important during the Spring, as peak-time shifts can stretch to 13hrs plus”. Aaron has also been delighted with Chafer’s FieldVision lighting packs on both the booms and the body of the machine itself. “We can easily see the spray patterns when working into the night hours, thanks to some expertly considered lighting solutions” he adds.

AF Monks also specified an Individual Nozzle Control capability as part of their design. This improves accuracy in spraying on headlands by reducing overlaps, as crops can be scorched if overlapping occurs too freely – as well as keeping chemical and fertiliser costs to a minimum. They were also impressed with Chafer’s Pulse-Width-Modulation (PWM) system and the additional accuracy this can provide when controlling the flow on turns. It is a feature they may well consider as part of a potential retro fit in upcoming seasons.

Productivity is further enhanced by customisable settings for the CVXDrive, the patented Advanced Trailer Braking system and up to 24 powerful LED lights for improved night visibility.  EcoDrive split throttle means whether you are transporting,  baling or mowing – you’re always working at the ideal and most fuel-efficient rpm.

The Puma 260 CVXDrive is equipped with bigger and stronger front and rear axles and optional 2.05m-diameter 710/70R42 rear tyres increasing the footprint by up to 18 per cent, maximising traction and carrying capacity while minimising soil compaction. Ideal for customers requiring higher power, but not a larger, heavier tractor, it’s fitted with a rear linkage which can lift 10,468kg and a hydraulic system with a flow rate of up to 170 lit/min. All of this within the same compact dimensions as the current Puma.

And when it comes to driving luxury, the cab breaks all expectations, with increased space, storage and better visibility via its panoramic view. Inside, a multitude of convenient features include a key fob that provides keyless operation in conjunction with the engine starter button, subwoofer speaker to optimise sound quality from the stereo system, additional space for personal belongings, plus an integrated coolbox to keep food and beverages cool and fresh. The maximum sound level inside the cab is just 66dB(A), comparable to that of a luxury car, making it extremely comfortable.  The semi-active hydro-pneumatic cab suspension isolates the operator from vehicle movement eliminating vibrations whatever the terrain and the optional Case IH Advanced Vehicle Suspension (AVS) system takes this to another level by integrating the semi-active cab suspension, rear hitch and front-axle suspension, allowing this sophisticated software to react further to changing surfaces for an even smoother ride.

And the enhancements go on… The cab also features wider steps for easier, safer entry and exit, conveniently placed grab handles, new fenders that enhance side visibility and a windscreen wiper with up to 240 degrees coverage. The 460-litre fuel tank is 15 per cent larger, giving up to three hours more working time before refilling. It also includes an integrated stowage space for a toolbox and other essential service items so that these don’t need to be carried inside. An integrated clean water tank enables the operator to wash their hands, significantly improving hygiene and safety when working with equipment such as sprayers.

The 750-hour service interval for the Puma 260 CVXDrive is up to 50 per cent longer than some key competitors in this premium market segment, so less time is spent on maintenance and more time working.

Meet Carl Skinner, who joined T H WHITE Dairy earlier this year based from our Frome branch. Carl has been with the company for around 6 months now and has spent most of that time out on the road covering a large area of South West England– servicing, repairing and helping to install DeLaval dairy parlours.

Born and bred in Tiverton, Devon, Carl got involved with farming and machinery at the age of 16 after leaving school. Helping out at local farms he did a bit of everything, from tillage to machinery upkeep and of course to milking cows. He took a Public Service course at East Devon College with a view to studying engineering in the Forces.  He had a keen interest in the Forces and whilst the course gave him a huge insight into army life and operations, Carl went on to pursue engineering on a different path.  He began working for Lloyd Maunders who are a Devon based group of retail butchers and a major producer of locally reared meat and chicken products.  Here, he was responsible for all kinds of general repairs around their beef, sheep and chicken farming enterprise.

Carl subsequently became focused on Dairy equipment, with jobs in Somerset and Devon where he became a certified service technician for milking robots. Looking to develop further within the industry, Carl put out a post on a Facebook group interested in connecting with other Dairy Engineers to discuss development opportunities.  The post was spotted by Chris Newey, our VMS Specialist working from T H WHITE Huntley. Chris reached out about the opportunity to join the team at T H WHITE Dairy and Carl jumped at the chance!  The rest is history – he has since settled in well and very glad for the variety that the job offers him; particularly being outdoors and on farm, being hands-on with servicing equipment or having great satisfaction when he is able to solve breakdown issues.

Outside of Dairy engineering, Carl has a lifelong passion for football and plays for Amory Green Rovers of Tiverton. Keen to pass on his skills to the next generation, he also coaches the Culm Sandford United Under 10 Junior Team. For a change of pace, Carl likes to play golf and walk his 3-year-old Sprocker Spaniel ‘Ottis’ in the countryside – especially taking in the views up on Dartmoor.

The PROFILE 2 CL mixers have 2 vertical augers, a large hopper and feed out via a cross-conveyor. These machines are suited to herds of between 90 and 265 cattle, designed to make the most of maximum tub capacity with the lowest possible overall height.  The double-pitch angle of the auger enables quick breakdown of feed, no matter how full the machine already is.  To reduce power consumption, this unit is equipped with 6 asymmetric knives which have a “self-cleaning” effect and also have a progressive-cutting knife edge for constant torque transfer. Kuhn PRIMOR 3750 Straw Blower & Feeder – adjustable regulating tines, can cater for square bales < 2.7m length, (2 available)

The PRIMOR 3570 M has been designed and developed for farmers looking for a 3.5 m3 straw bedder and feeder compatible with 50 HP tractors (70 HP for haylage bales).  It’s large capacity cuts down on handling times: 1 bale with a diameter of 2 metres, and 2 of up to 1.5 m in diameter.

The adjustable regulating system with 3 preset positions is key to its flexibility.  For difficult foodstuffs such as long fibres and haylage bales, the low positioning of the boom prevents forage from getting into the turbine, ensuring fibres are effectively and evenly distributed.  And of course the quality of the straw is key so setting the tines to the raised position allows you to increase the flow of straw into the turbine with minimal flattening..  Maximum blowing distance – 18m.

New Holland T4s and T5s have been popular choices for professional fruit growers for some time but the new T4 F N & V series launched at SIMA this year really offers the full package for growers and paired with Dondi specialised implements – the two are the perfect combination.

Following on from the benchmark speciality TN series, the new T4 F/N/V models are precision made with the same modular build concept. Tom Downes-Hopkins is ready to bolster the T H WHITE Sales team at Hereford after a successful career in the workshop.

With thirteen years of engineering experience under his belt, Tom is now ready to swap his go-to tools of the trade from an impact gun and rachet to a laptop and mobile phone. Tom has taken an exciting step to join Ben Linton in machinery sales at our Hereford branch selling our premium brands – New Holland, Manitou, Kverneland and Väderstad to name a few.  He will focus on serving customers located in South Herefordshire and to the west across South Poweys and Monmouthshire in Wales.

A graduate of the New Holland backed Land-Based Service Engineering Diploma, Tom studied at Reaseheath College undertaking his apprenticeship with Ravenhill which was subsequently acquired by JG Plant and then became part of T H WHITE. Reflecting on the T H WHITE acquisition of JG Plant, he says the team has remained pretty much the same providing consistency of service to our local customers, but the branch has benefited from the investment and greater resources of the wider company.

During his days as a technician, Tom gained a wealth of knowledge across the whole product range with a more in-depth understanding of New Holland and Manitou products particularly.  He undertook numerous technical training courses – even doing his work experience at the NH Zedelgem Combine Harvester factory in Belgium. He plans to put this extensive machine knowledge to good use in recommending the right machinery solutions for the needs of arable, hops, beef and dairy farming operations found in the local area. Although this is his first sales role, Tom can sell with confidence knowing every piece of equipment from the T H WHITE portfolio will be looked after for its lifetime – having seen firsthand the excellent levels of support delivered by the service team at Hereford.

No stranger to the demands of farming as well as engineering, Tom comes from the family beef and sheep farm in Dilwyn North Herefordshire. Dad to a toddler and soon to be married, there’s no time to slow down. Best of luck in your new role Tom!
